Ans:- The noun which denotes one or more than one is called number.
How many types of number?
Ans:- There are two types of number
1- Singular Number
2- Plural Number
What is Singular Number?
Ans:- A naming word which refers to one person, animal, bird, thing or place is called singular number.
Ex:- a boy, a girl, an eagle, a chair etc
What is Plural Number?
Ans:- A naming word which refers to more than one person, animal, bird, thing or place is called plural number.
Ex:- boys, girls, eagles, chairs, etc
Rules for making plural number
1- Generally we make plural of simple words by adding -'s'
Example -
cat cats
plate plates
piano pianos
shop shops
2- If the last alphabet of a word is either -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x and -o . then we add -es to make plural
Example-
bus buses
glass glasses
brush brushes
bench benches
fox foxes
tomato tomatoes
3- If the last alphabet of a word is 'y' and before y, there is a constant, then replace y with 'ies' to make plural.
puppy puppies
lady ladies
4- If the last alphabet of a word is 'y' and before y, there is a vowel, then add 's' to make plural.
boy boys
key keys
5- If the last alphabet of a word is 'f ' or ' fe ' then replace 'f ' or ' fe ' with 'ves' to make plural.
loaf loaves
knife knives
6- Some words are made plurals by adding vowels.
man men
child children
7- Some nouns are used only in the plural
Ex:- Scissors, glasses, shorts, jeans, gloves, sandles, boots, thanks, shoes, slippers, tongs, stockings
